Sourdough French Toast with Condensed Milk
Sourdough French Toast with Condensed Milk
By Chartutu
This isn’t your average French toast. Thick slices of tangy sourdough soak up a rich, cinnamon-spiced custard made with sweetened condensed milk and whole milk for a perfectly golden, caramelized finish. Crisp on the outside, soft in the middle — it's everything you want in a breakfast, brunch, or cozy treat.
Ingredients
-
2 large eggs
-
1/4 cup whole milk
-
1 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk
-
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
-
2–4 slices of sourdough bread (preferably 1–2 days old)
-
Butter, for cooking
-
Powdered sugar or fresh fruit, for serving
Instructions
1. Make the Liquid
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, condensed milk, and cinnamon until smooth and fully combined.
2. Soak the Bread
Dip each slice of sourdough into the mixture, letting it soak for about 15–20 seconds per side. Allow it to absorb the custard but not fall apart. Thicker slices may need a bit longer.
3. Cook on the Stove
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a pat of butter. Once melted and bubbling, place the soaked slices onto the pan.
Cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust time as needed depending on the thickness of your bread.
4. Serve
Top your French toast with powdered sugar, fresh berries, sliced bananas, or a drizzle of maple syrup — whatever you’re feeling.
Tips
-
Day-old sourdough works best. It holds its shape and soaks up the custard without getting soggy.
-
You can scale up the custard easily to serve more people.
-
Add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of nutmeg for a deeper flavor.
This is one of those easy, satisfying recipes you’ll keep coming back to. Whether you’re using up extra sourdough from the week or just want to impress at brunch — this version brings something special to the table.
